Recreation
All mitigation projects are on hold until further notice.
The CBMC has made recreation and the improvements of playgrounds a priority. They have been working with the Army Corps of Engineers and Friends of NORD to renovate 7 playgrounds in the impact area. A grant agreement between the Corps and Friends of NORD for the renovation of Richard Lee playground was finalized in April of 2004. The City of New Orleans and NORD have leveraged the Corps $200,000 with an additional $120,000. The construction of Richard Lee is scheduled to begin ion the fall of 2005. NOTE: Because of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, the CBMC funds that were allocated for use at Richard Lee have been redirected to Mickey Markey Playground.
In April 2005, the CBMC Recreation Working Group met with the City of New Orleans , NORD, and Friends of NORD to discuss future plans for impact area playgrounds. In 2004, the City of New Orleans voted to approve a $260 million bond issue. In part, this bond will specifically fund playground improvements in the impact area. With this additional funding, increased improvements will be possible at these playgrounds.
