From
late May through July 2001, GCR & Associates, Inc. ,
performed field work to inventory all the vacant lots in the impact area.
There were a total of 1341 vacant lots recorded. 646 were deemed
maintained and 695 were not maintained. Maintained defines
a lot with grass regularly cut, no trash and possibly fenced. Not
maintained defines a lot that may range from one to over four
feet of overgrowth, may have excessive trash and waste, and is a veritable
health hazard to the community. The Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood
had a disproportionately large number of vacant lots in the entire
impact area, with 981 vacant lots, 501 of which were considered not
maintained. This 981 figure represents 73% of the vacant lots recorded
for the impact community; and the 501 represents 73% of the not maintained
vacant lots.
The two links below are maps that offer a visual presentation
of the vacant lots in the impact area. The first shows all the vacant
lots categorized as maintained and not maintained. The second shows all
the vacant lots and their levels of vegetative overgrowth.
